Why another initiative? Isn’t El Toro dead?

The March 5th, 2002 election showed very low voter turnout at the polls. Those who did vote for Irvine’s Measure W were promised a “Great Park”, and though Measure W passed, it is highly unlikely that they will ever get what they voted for. The validity of Measure W is being challenged in the courts. And just as South County’s Measure F was overturned, so may Measure W.

We can stop Irvine’s “land grab”

While the Navy is currently acting on the “law of the land” imposed by Measure W by announcing that will sell off El Toro, it is impossible for the Navy to take any immediate action on handing over former MCAS El Toro to the City of Irvine as they are hoping. It will be several months before any action can be taken. This clearly gives us a window of opportunity to restore El Toro as an option by placing this initiative on the November 2002 ballot. The Navy has determined that the highest and best use for El Toro is an airport. The Federal Aviation Administration agrees that El Toro would best be served as an airport to ease the shortage of runways in our nation. The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) also agrees that El Toro is needed to ease the growing demands in the Southern California Region. Irvine, on the other hand, refuses to acknowledge the need and demand for El Toro, and refuses to act responsibly in securing a reasonable airport at El Toro.

What will happen if we don’t act now:

If Irvine’s “land grab” is successful, it will likely mean that the 4,700 acre former MCAS El Toro will be developed into an extension of the City of Irvine: more Homes, a few token acres of open space/ parks, more Businesses, and more Research & Development facilities - all of which will create far more traffic than an airport! Such development of former MCAS El Toro, combined with The City of Irvine/ The Irvine Company’s development plans for the Northern Sphere and the Western Sphere surrounding El Toro, will further tax our air and ground transportation network. This will mean further needed expansions to our existing freeways and airports, translating to a lessened quality of life for all Orange County residents.

The People of Orange County can stop this and should stop this!

Park-rich Irvine does not need a central park, more housing and more industry. What they do need is to preserve what is left of their rich Irvine Ranch heritage. The Irvine Company has been trumpeting their 53,000 acre open space Land Reserve as late. This translates to two “Great Central Parks!” Southwest of former MCAS El Toro is over 15,000 acres of dedicated Land Reserve, also known as the Crystal Cove State Park. North and Northwest of former MCAS El Toro is over 35,000 acres of dedicated Land Reserve, not to mention the entire Cleveland National Forest park lands! Yet greedy Irvine wants more, and want’s total control of former MCAS El Toro. And the clincher is that they want it all for practically free!

This is what we must do:

Those who do not agree with Irvine’s “all for me” quality of life and land grab mentality can stop this injustice by supporting the Reasonable Airport, Park & Nature Preserve Initiative. It is time for Irvine to take their fair share of generated demands rather than shoving it onto their already burdened neighbors and neighboring counties. For 58 years, MCAS El Toro has served as an “airport” which was established long before the City of Irvine was developed. With over 53,00 acres of permanent open space in which to serve as flight tracks into and out of the proposed airport at El Toro, Irvine’s/ South County’s quality of life in no way will be adversely impacted. It is time to kill the South County propaganda machine and defend the county’s best and highest reuse plan for El Toro: an airport!
